Eight miles at 20 minutes a mile is 2 hours and 40 minutes on your feet with weight. That’s the free Veterans Day Honor Ruck in New York City on Wednesday, November 11. If you can’t get to Lower Manhattan, or you’ve only been walking with a vest for a few weeks, you can still take part. You just need the right distance, the right weight, and a plan for honoring someone along the way.
Quick answer: The 2026 Veterans Day Honor Ruck is a free group ruck organized by the United War Veterans Council with GORUCK. It starts at 8:00 AM on November 11 at the New York Vietnam Veterans Memorial (55 Water St) and ends about 8 miles later at the Flatiron Building, at a 20-minute-mile pace. Weight is at your discretion. Can’t be there? Walk 1–8 miles at home with a vest of 0–10% of your body weight, matched to what you already do.

What is the Veterans Day Honor Ruck in NYC?
A ruck is a walk with weight on your back or torso. The NYC Honor Ruck turns that walk into a tribute. According to GORUCK’s official event page, the group passes war memorials and historic landmarks in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. The United War Veterans Council (UWVC) organizes it. UWVC also produces the New York City Veterans Day Parade.

The timing works out neatly. At the listed pace, 8 miles takes about 2 hours 40 minutes, so the group should reach the Flatiron area late in the morning. The Veterans Day Parade steps off at 12:30 PM from Fifth Avenue at 26th Street, a few blocks north. A wreath-laying ceremony in Madison Square Park comes first, at 10:55 AM.
How do you sign up for the Honor Ruck?
- Open the event page. Go to goruck.com/products/uwvc-honor-ruck. It also appears in GORUCK’s event list as “FREE Honor Ruck – November 11th, 2026 at 8:00 AM.”
- Claim the free ticket. The ticket type is “Honor Ruck,” priced at $0.00. Add it to your cart and complete the checkout to register.
- Plan your morning. Be at 55 Water St before 8:00 AM. The first 100 people to show up get the extra 1776 patch.
- Plan your way home. You finish in Midtown, not where you started. And if you have to stop early, getting home is on you.
What should you bring to a Veterans Day ruck?
The official packing list is short: yourself, your ruck, water and snacks. Dress for the weather, and wear layers. The page also asks you to bring enough food and water to last the whole walk.
Here’s how we’d turn that into a checklist for a 2–3 hour walk in November:
- Your load: a snug backpack with weight placed high and close to your back, or a weighted vest. Anything you’ve already walked with for at least a few weeks.
- Water: enough to sip every 15–20 minutes, plus a little extra. Cool air hides sweat, but you still lose fluid under load.
- Food: an easy snack for each hour, like a banana, a granola bar or a handful of pretzels.
- Feet: broken-in walking shoes and wool or synthetic socks. Bring a spare pair of socks and a few blister bandages.
- Layers: a light base layer, a warm mid layer you can stuff into your pack, gloves and a hat. You’ll warm up fast once you’re moving.
- Phone, ID, transit card, and a small light if you’ll be walking in the dark before sunrise.
- A name to carry (more on that below).
How much weight should you carry?
The event leaves it up to you, and that’s a gift. For a long walk, lighter is smarter. Most medical sources cap walking vests at about 10% of body weight, and our weighted vest walking guide starts most people around 5%. An 8-mile day is not the day to test a new load.
| Your body weight | Easy start (about 5%) | Upper limit for a long walk (about 10%) |
|---|---|---|
| 130 lb (59 kg) | 6–7 lb (3 kg) | 13 lb (6 kg) |
| 150 lb (68 kg) | 7–8 lb (3.5 kg) | 15 lb (7 kg) |
| 170 lb (77 kg) | 8–9 lb (4 kg) | 17 lb (8 kg) |
| 190 lb (86 kg) | 9–10 lb (4.5 kg) | 19 lb (8.5 kg) |

Can’t make it to New York? Do a Veterans Day ruck anywhere
You don’t need a city, a crowd or a 30-lb pack. A Veterans Day ruck at home can be a loop around your neighborhood with a vest you already own. Below is the version we’d suggest for women 40 and older. It works for anyone who’s newer to walking with weight. Pick the row that matches what you’re doing now, not what you’d like to be doing.
| Where you are now | Distance on Nov 11 | Vest weight | Time at a 20-min mile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walk regularly, but new to weight | 1–2 miles | None, or up to 3% of body weight (about 0–5 lb) | 20–40 min |
| Walking with a vest for under 6 weeks | 2–3 miles | About 5% (7–8 lb at 150 lb) | 40–60 min |
| Regular vest walker, 45-minute sessions | 3–5 miles | 5–8% | 1 hr–1 hr 40 min |
| Comfortable with 60–90 minutes under load | 6–8 miles | Up to about 10% | 2 hr–2 hr 40 min |
These are HealthyCarry planning ranges, not results from a study. Shorten the distance or drop the weight if anything hurts.
Our rule for event days: go no more than about 1 mile past your longest loaded walk of the last month. If you want to go further than ever, walk the extra miles with the vest off or with half the weight. Finishing strong honors the day better than limping home.
A few symbolic ways to shape your walk:
- 11 for 11/11: walk 11 minutes out and 11 back, or do 1.1 miles. That’s a great option if you’re brand new.
- Match the New York pace: 20 minutes a mile, for whatever distance fits your row.
- Time it to a pause: plan your route so you’re standing still at 11:00 AM or at the national moment of silence (see below).
How fast should you walk?
A 20-minute mile is 3 miles per hour. For most people that’s a brisk but chatty walk. Use the talk test: you should be able to speak in full sentences. If you can’t, slow down or take weight out. Make the first mile the slowest so your feet, hips and shoulders can settle in. On longer walks, stop for a few minutes every 40–60 minutes to drink, eat something and check your feet and straps. The rucking pace calculator shows what your usual pace means for time and effort.
How do you stay safe on a long ruck?
Long walks with weight are mostly gentle on the body. The common problems are small ones that grow when you ignore them. A review of military load carriage lists foot blisters as one of the most common injuries, along with back strains and foot pain. And soldiers carry far more than we’re talking about here.
- Start light. Use the table above. Weight you’ve trained with beats weight you hope you can handle.
- Protect your feet. No new shoes on event day. Put a bandage on any hot spot as soon as you feel it, not at the finish.
- Drink before you’re thirsty. Take small sips every 15–20 minutes, and eat something each hour on walks longer than about 90 minutes.
- Keep the load close. A vest should feel snug with no bounce. A pack should sit high, with straps tightened so it doesn’t sway.
- Go easy on descents. Downhills and stairs load your knees more than the pack does. Our guide on whether rucking is bad for your knees has the numbers.
- Dress in layers. November mornings can start cold and warm up quickly. Shed a layer before you start sweating heavily.
Stop and get help if you notice: chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath that doesn’t settle when you slow down, dizziness or fainting, sharp joint pain that changes how you walk, or numbness or tingling in your arms or hands (loosen your straps right away). If you have heart disease, osteoporosis, a recent injury or you’re pregnant, ask your clinician before adding weight. This article is general information, not medical advice.
How can you honor veterans on your ruck?
The weight is the easy part. The meaning comes from what you do with the walk. Here are a few ideas that work anywhere:
- Pause at the 11th hour. World War I fighting ended when the armistice took effect at 11:00 AM on November 11, 1918. The VA notes that 11 a.m. remains a traditional hour for remembering. Stop where you are, take off your hat and stand quietly for a minute.
- Join the national moment of silence. Under the Veterans Day Moment of Silence Act of 2016, the President calls for a two-minute national moment of silence at 2:11 PM Eastern (1:11 PM Central, 12:11 PM Mountain, 11:11 AM Pacific). It’s a natural end point for an afternoon walk.
- Carry a name. Look up a veteran from your town, or your own family, on the VA’s Veterans Legacy Memorial. Write the name on a strip of tape on your vest or pack. Afterward, you can leave a short tribute on their memorial page.
- Walk with veterans, not just for them. Many VFW posts (find a post), American Legion posts, Team Red, White & Blue chapters and GORUCK clubs host Veterans Day walks or rucks. Or invite a veteran in your life to walk with you, no weight required, and ask about their service if they want to share.
- Give something. Put the cost of a coffee per mile toward a veterans group you trust, or volunteer with one.
- Keep it about them. The NYC event bans political signs and clothing. That’s a good rule for a home ruck too.
If you or a veteran you know is struggling: the Veterans Crisis Line is free, confidential and open 24/7. Dial 988 then press 1, text 838255, or chat at veteranscrisisline.net. You don’t have to be enrolled in VA benefits or health care to reach out.
A simple 2-week lead-up to November 11
There are about two weeks left. That’s not enough time to build a new base, but it’s enough to get comfortable with your chosen row.
- This week: do 2–3 walks with your event-day vest weight. Make one of them about two-thirds of your planned distance.
- Next week: do one walk at your full planned distance (or close), in the shoes, socks and layers you’ll wear on the day. Keep the other walks short and easy.
- The last 3 days: walk easy with no weight. Pack your bag the night before, and write your name tag.
New to all of this? Start with our beginner’s guide to rucking, and do the 1–2 mile row on the day. That still counts.
FAQ
When and where is the 2026 Veterans Day Honor Ruck in NYC?

Is the Honor Ruck free, and how do I register?
Yes, it’s free to the public. Register by claiming the $0 “Honor Ruck” ticket on GORUCK’s UWVC Honor Ruck event page. It’s open to veterans, veteran supporters and active military, and it’s family-friendly, with children escorted by an adult.
How much weight do I have to carry?
None is required. The official page says weight is at your discretion. For a walk of 2–3 hours, most people do best at about 5–10% of their body weight, or less if they’re new to rucking.
Can I do a Veterans Day ruck with a weighted vest?
Yes. A snug weighted vest works well for a home Veterans Day ruck. Pick a distance you’ve already walked with that vest, about 5% of your body weight if you’re newer to it, and add a moment of silence or a name you carry.
How long does an 8-mile ruck take?
At the event’s 20-minutes-per-mile pace, about 2 hours and 40 minutes of walking, plus any stops. At a more relaxed 22–24 minutes per mile, plan on roughly 3 to 3 hours 15 minutes.
What time is the Veterans Day moment of silence?
The national two-minute moment of silence is at 2:11 PM Eastern, 1:11 PM Central, 12:11 PM Mountain and 11:11 AM Pacific. Many people also pause at 11:00 AM, the hour the World War I armistice took effect in 1918.
