Our method
This is the standard every gear rating on HealthyCarry has to meet before it’s published. Here is exactly how weighted vests, rucking backpacks and the gear around them will be tested, so you can judge our ratings for yourself.
Where we are now (October 2026): we have not published any hands-on gear ratings yet. Until a product has gone through this full protocol, our articles explain how to choose gear and cite published research and manufacturer specs, and we say so on the page.
Standard loads
Gear is tested at three loads that match how most people progress: 10 lb, 20 lb and 30 lb (about 4.5, 9 and 13.6 kg). Vests that only come in one weight are tested at that weight.
Three standard routes
- Pavement: a flat 3-mile loop at a brisk walk.
- Trail: a hilly route with real climbs and descents.
- Treadmill: 3.0 mph at 5% incline, for repeatable bounce and heat checks.
Minimum distance
No rating is published before at least 25 logged miles per weighted vest and 50 logged miles per rucking backpack, with GPS logs kept. Long-term picks are revisited at 3 and 6 months.
What we measure
- Real weight vs. label: every product goes on a scale.
- Bounce: filmed at a brisk walk and a light jog.
- Fit across bodies: including different chest sizes and short or long torsos.
- Pressure and chafing: shoulder and strap hot spots after an hour.
- Heat and sweat, noise, adjustability, washability and warranty.
How we score
Each product gets a scored rubric (fit, comfort, stability, build, value). Scores are compared within a price tier, so a $40 vest isn’t judged against a $250 one.
Health information
Training and health articles cite primary research and say clearly when evidence is limited or mixed. When an article has been reviewed by a qualified professional, the reviewer is named on the page with the review date; articles without a named reviewer have not been professionally reviewed yet. HealthyCarry is educational and is not medical advice.
